Sculpting Project: Never Underestimate the Power of the Prime
Believe it or not, Environmental Primes
Research found:
- Subjects who help out an overloaded researcher by holding a cup of hot or iced coffee will later rate that researcher as warm and friendly if the coffee was hot and as cold and less social if the coffee was iced.
- Fund raisers raise more money if the donation record book used has a picture of a runner crossing the finish line.
- If the words are ‘intrude, disturb, interrupt’ the subjects interrupt a busy researcher in about 5 minutes.
- If the words are ‘yield or courteous’ 82% of the subjects never interrupt the busy researcher.
An environmental prime is something we take-in with our 5 senses that influences us.
Some primes are loud and clear, many are quiet and unobserved.
Nearly every study I found on primes caused me to open my eyes wide and say ‘Really?!’.
I had no clue how strongly I am influenced by my environment.
Now that my eyes are open to the power of the prime I am beginning to take some control of the situation and create primes for my own purposes.
A few primes I’ve tried to promote my goals:
- A chalk/white board/ post-it notes with a rem
inder word. - My big picture goals written on my week’s schedule.
- Candles and music for suppers. (Goal: slowing down and savoring)
- Toys available (Goal
: Play)
I am still in the thick of my Marie Kondo beauty creation goal. It is a lot of work, but I have one prime that never fails to bring satisfaction and encourages me to press on. It is my linen shelves; the only category that I have not only sorted, but also completed a set-up. The prime reminds me that this is where I am headed for the whole house. Beauty, order, accessibility, and fun.
What about you? What primes can you create to promote your goals and aspirations?
Sculpting Project: Using the Power of the Prime
1. Look, listen, smell, taste, touch your world and notice the primes coming your way.
2. Select one of your soul goals or life desires and create primes to promote it.
