Sculpting Project 1 Three Things: Some Tips from the Future: Week 2
In the upcoming weeks the posts you will be reading were created for the first group of Sculptors. I was doing those particular projects along with everyone else and learning as I went. Posts became more concise and hopefully easier to follow as I grew in experience. In watching others do the projects and doing them myself I have observed several things I want to pass on to you as you begin.
Observation 1:
If you choose to stick with sculpting for at least a few weeks your well-being will be increased. And when your well-being is increased the well-being of everyone you relate to will also be increased.
Observation 2:
Sculpting Projects will enhance your relationship with God.
Observation 3:
Sticking with anything for more than a few weeks can be challenging. Here are a few tips I have found helpful for sculpting. (These come from my own observations and psychological research on how we change.)
- Keep it quick. Set aside 5 minutes or so to do the project. If you are having a great time doing the project then take more time but don’t feel you need to prolong the project on a regular basis.
- Keep it simple. In the case of Three Things don’t agonize over picking the perfect three loves. Pick what comes to mind and if you can’t think of 3 then write 2 or 1 thing you love.
- Set aside a specific time each day to take your 5 minutes. Connect it to another activity like getting out of or into bed, eating breakfast, or a devotional practice you already have established.
- If you forget a day (or more) don’t worry about it. Just start-up again.
- If you don’t like a project after giving it a try then skip it and return to another project you did like.
- Don’t feel you need to keep all projects going week after week. Keep doing as many as you want to but go easy on yourself. After you reach project 4 you will begin to feel overwhelmed if you are still doing 1,2, and 3. One project at a time is enough. Unless, of course, you want to do more.
Observation 4:
These Sculpting Projects can be transformational. They are worth the effort.
Sculpting Project 1: Three Things
Each day write down 3 things that you love.
Three things idea: You might enjoy using your camera to hunt for things you love.
Things I love: Bright cactus blooms
“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength. Then secondly, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Mark 12:30-31
Using our strength to sculpt our heart, soul, and mind to love God and our neighbor.
Sculpting takes will-power.
Psychology research on will-power discovered that:
Willpower is much like a muscle.
Willpower gets tired when you use it a lot.
Willpower gets stronger when you exercise it.
